Do You Want To Avoid Writing A Mediocre Talk?

Do You Want To Avoid Writing A Mediocre Talk?

None of us sits down to write a mediocre talk, but lots of of them are out there. So how do we ensure we are the ones writing a STELLAR talk? One that makes an impacts and drives real change?

It starts with understanding something about human nature. Our brains are hard wired to process different stimuli in different areas. We process features, benefits, facts and figures in our neo-cortex. Unfortunately, this part of our brain doesn’t drive behavior. That happens in the limbic center. This is where we experience feelings, which in turn controls our behavior and our decisions. So in a nutshell, we can feed our audiences all the data we want, but if we haven’t touched their feelings, we haven’t driven behavior.

In Simon Sinek’s Ted Talk on Start With Why he explains that everyone knows “What” they do (the products or services they offer) and some people are clear on “How” they do this (their value proposition). However very few people can articulate “WHY” they do this, what is their higher purpose, their reason for getting going each morning.

Disseminating information on a new a procedure, or a marketing tactic, or a game-changing tool is easy; just write a paper about it. Become loud by emailing it out to everyone possible. Being CLEAR is harder. When a speaker is clear about the purpose, or the WHY of this new thing, everyone can understand it. This clarity allows everyone to become champions of the cause. When everything you say and do echoes what you believe, you end up with a message that’s loud AND clear.

So dig deep, ask yourself WHY 3-5 times; why is this topic important? Why this topic has impacted you and will impact others? Keep going until you find that emotional tug, that gotcha moment. Start your talk there. Next, you can describe HOW this new tool is different or game-changing for your audience. And finally, fill in the details by providing the features, benefits, facts and figures as proof.

My WHY? I have had so many mentors throughout my life give me tools that have helped me stand a little taller and be a better version of myself. If I can be of service to help you stand taller or be more authentic, then I will have taken a step on the journey of paying it forward. So give me a call today to discuss how we can craft your STELLAR presentation!
